The Revenue have announced that the number of employers putting in their year-end PAYE returns online jumped from 85,000 in 2003/04 to 935,000 in 2004/05. Could this be something to do with the fact that they were willing to pay £250 to any small business which filed online? There's another £250 for the 2005/06 returns, and smaller incentives for the three after that.

If you operate your payroll on a computer, you will probably need to have software that will talk to the Revenue's computers. But if you are a very small business with simple PAYE records, it's quite easy to complete the returns using the Revenue's own software.

The only catch is, you need to register for online filing in advance. You have to go to the Revenue's website www.hmrc.gov.uk and apply for a User ID and Activation PIN. This will be posted to you. You can then use the system when you need to file after 5 April.

So many people tried to log on immediately after the year-end in 2005 that the computers crashed. We can only hope that the Revenue will be better prepared this year - they would argue that it was the unexpected success of online filing that created the problem.

If you need any help with online filing or any other PAYE issues, we will be happy to help.
